Q. The volume control on my stereo has static, does not work properly or does the opposite function when turning?

A. This is a "Do It Yourself" repair. I suggest a trip to Radio Shack for their "Control/Contact Cleaner".

There are two main types of volume control rheostats.

  • A Surface mount rheostat - accessible by removing the volume control knob.

  • A standard volume control rheostat - accessible by removing the stereo from the dash, removing one of the covers from the stereo allows access to the volume rheostat. (See removal instructions from links at left on this page)

In both cases, spray the rheostat with "Control/Contact Cleaner". Rotate the control several times. Repeat this process several times. In most cases this will take care of the problem and save repair costs. YOU CAN DO IT!

If this does not take care of the problem, see Shipping before sending for repair.

NOTE - This process may not work for many Nissan and Infiniti Clarion car stereos, these stereos require repair.
